In the distant French city of Rouen, at a time when carriages rumbled over cobblestones and candles were the main source of light in the evenings, there lived an amazing young man named Blaise Pascal. Blaise was only 18 years old, but his head was full of such intricate thoughts that even gray—haired professors sometimes shrugged their shoulders:
«Where did a young man get such a deep mind from?»
More than anything else, Blaise adored numbers and formulas. They danced in his head like merry dancers at a fair. Blaise’s father worked as a tax collector. He spent his days sitting at a huge desk covered with piles of papers and adding up huge numbers. Day after day, week after week. The fountain pen creaked, the ink stained his fingers, and his eyes were so tired. That by evening his father could barely make out the numbers.
One evening, Blaise, watching his father sigh once again and rub his eyes, went up to him and pronounced:
—Father, I’ve figured out how to make your job easier! I will create a magic machine that will add and subtract large numbers by itself!
The father smiled, patted his son on the head and replied:
—Oh, Blaise, you’re a dreamer! But try it — who knows, maybe your idea will really turn out to be magical.

And Blaise got down to business. He spent days and nights drawing diagrams [ˈdaɪəgræm], thinking, tinkering, disassembling, and reassembling. There were gears, wheels, metal plates, and strips of paper with calculations everywhere in his room. The neighbors whispered, «What is he making there? Is it a magical artifact?»
Finally, the day came when Blaise solemnly rolled a small, elegant box made of polished wood into the middle of the room. There were windows with numbers on the sides, and a row of small levers on top. — Here it is, — the young man announced proudly. — My calculating machine! I’ll call it Pascaline!
He showed his father how to set numbers with levers, turn the handle — and now the results of additions and subtractions appeared in the windows! Father couldn’t believe his eyes: the machine worked accurately and quickly, without mistakes and fatigue.
— Blaise, this is a real miracle! What is it? — he exclaimed. — You didn’t just make my job easier — you opened a new era [ˈɪərə]!
The news of the wonderful Pascaline spread throughout the city and then throughout France. Scientists came from far and wide to look at the invention of the young genius. They were turning levers, checking calculations and shaking their heads in admiration:
— This young man will turn the world of mathematics upside down!
So 18‑year-old Blaise Pascal, driven by love for his father and thirst for knowledge… He created one of the first mechanical [mɪˈkænɪkəl] calculating machines — the forerunner of modern calculators. And even though Pascaline was not as fast as today’s computers. At that time it seemed like real magic, born of the power of the human mind.
