Imagine: 1930, the world still does not know trampolines. There are no outdoor activities for you, no playgrounds with sky jumps — even in the circus there are none! Circus gymnasts somersault under the dome, the audience gasps, but no one guesses: I wish I could jump after all the flips!
And then George Nissen comes on stage, a guy whose imagination worked faster than a gymnast turns a somersault.
George relished the circus more than anything in the world. He went there so often that the staff already recognized his face and nodded: «Oh, that young acrobatic [ækrəˈbætɪk] enthusiast [ɪnˈθjuːzɪæst] again!»
One day, when George turned 16, he sat in the circus, holding his breath, and watched the gymnasts soar under the dome. And suddenly it dawned on him: «Stop! What if they don’t just land on the mats, but keep jumping? Up and down, up and down-that’s going to be a sight!» He was so caught up in the idea that he almost took off during the performance.
Barely waiting for the end of the show, George rushed home—or rather, to his father’s garage. Dad was probably quietly fixing the car and suddenly sees: the son is flying in with burning eyes and shouting:
— Dad, I need metal, canvas and everything that comes to hand — I’m inventing the future!
And so work began to boil in the garage. George welded a metal frame and stretched a sturdy canvas over it to make the first trampoline.

To be honest, it didn’t look like much: like someone decided to make a giant drum, but changed their mind in the middle. It’s a little damp, shaky, but it’s original!
But George was not discouraged. He climbed on top of his creation, jumped up… and realized: This is a success! Let the first trampoline look more like a bouncing barn door, but it worked!
The news of the outlandish invention spread faster than a gymnast flies from a trapeze. Circuses began ordering trampolines one after another. First, for tricks, then just to make the audience squeal with delight.
Soon trampolines appeared in gyms, at children’s parties and in courtyards.… And then it gets even more fun. Trampolines have become so popular that they have even been used to train astronauts [ˈæstrənɔːt]! Yes, yes, imagine: somewhere in the astronaut [ˈæstrənɔːt] training center, serious people in white coats say: «So, today we are training on a trampoline ‑ we are learning to fly in zero gravity!»
So an ordinary teenager, who just adored the circus very much, gave the world entertainment that conquered not only the Earth, but also almost space. And all thanks to one simple thought: «And let’s jump some more!»
