Our Paulina is fond of collecting fairy tales. And when she comes to the village for the summer, grandpa always tells her something new about the very old. Paulina enjoyed one story about an old sailor very much.
It was in ancient times, when salt was valued above gold. Yes, states fought among themselves over salt. And if salt was finished in the city, the city began to starve and many died of poverty.
Old Captain Wrangell served his tsar [zɑː] faithfully. And he often transported ships with salt across the seas. He often rescued a ship with valuable cargo from attacks. But sometimes Captain Wrangell liked to earn extra money for himself. If he could get extra salt, he sold it secretly from the tsar.
It happened so that one time he received extra salt. But long ago, a young sailor joined the ship. He was too faithful to the tsar and decided to open the secret case of Captain Wrangell.
Soldiers came to the captain with the tsar’s order to show the hidden salt. The captain’s knees began to shake with fear: after all, he served his tsar faithfully. The captain was scared, but went to show the salt. And what was his surprise when there was no salt in the hold! Just a small salt puddle in the middle of the hold.

But it turned out that the anchor was swinging on board the ship for a long time and hit a small hole in the side. All the salt was washed away with water! The captain was sorry for the salt but he also could escape punishment.
After this incident, the captain decided to get rid of that young sailor. One day, his ship was crossing the sea with valuable cargo on board. And he was attacked by pirates. The brave captain’s team fought against the attack. And the captain wrote a report to the tsar about the young sailor. He was very brave in battle and the main fighter for the royal cargo. The captain thought that after that the young sailor would be sent as a captain to another ship. Because the tsar always valued the bravery of sailors and Soldiers.
But the next day, the young sailor showed the captain a medal for bravery and a certificate of honor from the tsar. And th at’s all!
The next case was when one of the tsar’s ships was sinking because of a hole in the side. And Captain Wrangell’s ship arrived in time and saved the tsar’s salt by loading it onto his ship. The captain wrote to the tsar again about how brave the young sailor was.
The next day, a young sailor came with an order from the tsar to appoint him as Captain Wrangell’s chief assistant. Since then, the captain was working with the young sailor together until the very end of his service. The captain couldn’t get rid of the unloved sailor!
