День знаний в разные времена

Снова в школу! И никакому школьнику не избежать празднования дня знаний. А знаете ли вы, как отмечали день знаний в разные времена? Например, когда наша страна называлась Советским союзом?

День знаний в разные времена. The day of knowledge.

The first of September hasn’t always been the day of knowledge.

When Peter the Great ruled the country it was New Year’s Day. Later, in 1700, he changed the date and as in other European [jʊ(ə)rəˈpɪən] Countries. Russian people began celebrating New Year on the First of January. By the way, it is Peter the First who established the law bout education. This law made children of all layers except peasants learn at educational institutes. They were called schools later. День знаний в разные времена.

During the revolution in 1917 the Russian government passed the following law. It obliged all children at the age of 8-10 years old to enter schools and get free education. In 1934 the First of September was recognized like the day of knowledge. And it was combined with the theme [θiːm] of peace. When in 1939 on the First of September Adolf Hitler [ˈhɪtlər] stirred up the Second World War the notion of peace became stronger. Then it fixed itself after this date. From 1943 till 1954 boys and girls were separated and learnt in different schools. It is in these days when uniform was brought about as an obligatory one.

Now the First of September is a holiday for majority of learners full of flowers, white girls’ ribbons, meetings with friendly schoolmates and joyful smiles. Usually this holiday is organized like a large hilarious meeting of recent and prosecuting studies pupils. The meeting is held in front of the school with speeches, loud music, with acting of dressed-up boys and girls who recite poems and sing school songs and … with yawning… because the children didn’t get used to getting up early. After this important part of the festival, when the symbol of the First of September the resounding bell is ringing, the teachers prosecute the lesson of Peace.

At the lesson, the learners will also learn wonderful information about the First of September.

The word septum, from which the name of the month of September came, meant «seven» in Latin (and octo in Latin — eight, novem — nine). Why seven, if September is the ninth month of the year?

Because this has been the case since the ancient calendar [ˈkælɪndə], which the Romans used long before the introduction of the Julian [ˈʤuːljən] calendar. At that time, they had only ten months of the year, and the year started in March — with the beginning of field work (as mentioned above, the tradition of starting the year in March was also not alien to Russia). Thus, September was the seventh month for the ancient Romans.

Julius Caesar [ˈʤuːljəs ˈsiːzə], having reformed the calendar, added two new months — January and February. And January became the first to open the year. The name of this month comes from the Latin janua, which corresponds not only to the name of the god Janus. But also to the concepts of «beginning», «door». So September became the ninth in a row, despite the seven in the title [taɪtl].
