Today is the first of September and it isn’t the birthday of the smiley face. According to one version, it was established on September 19, 1982. We’re figuring out when the first smiley actually appeared. Well, the oldest emoticons: in fact, emoticons have a much older history than one might think. Recently, archaeologists [ɑːkɪˈɒləʤɪst] found a clay jug with a smiling face in Turkey [ˈtɜːkɪ]. It was made in the 1700s BC.

Emoticons were also used in Slovakia [slə(ʊ)ˈvakɪə] in the 17th century. For example, a lawyer would finish painting a smiling face on a document when he was satisfied with everything in it. Emoticons in the 20th century over time, round smiling faces began to appear more often. In 1953, the smiley face was used on the poster of the film «Lily». Photo: New York Herald Tribune In 1958. The American radio station WMCA gave its listeners hoodies with a pattern resembling a smiley face.

Harvey Ball is the creator of the smiley face. It is believed that it was the American artist Harvey Ball who came up with the smiley face. He drew the classic version — a smooth yellow circle with black oval [ˈəʊvəl] eyes and a smile. In 1963, he received an order to design badges that would cheer up employees.

That’s when he came up with the smile. Unlike his predecessors, the artist guessed to patent [ˈpeɪtənt] the smiley face and was able to make good money on his invention. In 1999, Harvey Ball created The World Smile Corporation, which issues patents for the use of emoticons, and gives all the money earned to charity (he’s sitting at the table on the anniversary).

In the beginning was the word… This is how the Bible understands the world. But our accelerated [əkˈseləreɪtɪd] age has replaced the word with a sign. The Bible with icons. The idea to translate the Bible into the language of emoticons came to Kamran after he took part in the training of cinema skills, which was conducted through a charity program for schoolchildren from poor families. During her studies, a 16-year-old schoolgirl said that she had never read the Bible. When asked why the girl didn’t read it, she said, «If I can’t read it on my phone, then I won’t read it in writing.» To which Kamran replied, «And if I translate the Bible into the language of emoji, will you read it?» And the girl agreed. We can assume that this is a myth. Although we all use emoticons when communicating with gadgets.

The writer Vladimir Nabokov was the first to come up with the idea of using a bracket to represent a smiley face. In 1969, he said in an interview with “The New York Times” magazine that there should be a typographic [taɪpəˈgræfɪk] sign indicating a smile. He suggested something like a lying bracket for this.

a colon, a hyphen [ˈhaɪfən] and a parenthesis [pəˈrenθɪsɪs]. That is, he came up with such a smiley face :-).
