Harvey Ball is the creator of the smiley face. It is believed that it was the American artist Harvey Ball who came up with the smiley face. That’s when he came up with the smile. Unlike his predecessors, the artist guessed to patent [ˈpeɪtənt] the smiley face and was able to make good money on his invention. In 1999, Harvey Ball created The World Smile Corporation, which issues patents for the use of emoticons, and gives all the money earned to charity (he’s sitting at the table on the anniversary).
