Модальные глаголы, как известно, являются не вполне полноценными глаголами. У них нет, к примеру, третьей формы глагола, а она нужна, чтобы построить предложение в Perfect или в Passive Voice. А также в будущем времени не обойтись без заменителей. Сегодня мы разговариваем про заменитель глагола can в прошедшем времени, когда could заменяется на to be able to или managed to. Зачем это нужно и что это за прием – простыми словами с примерами.

Недавно мы с вами вспоминали модальный глагол can и его заменитель to be able to: в настоящем и прошедшем временах он нужен для усиления в предложении, чтобы подчеркнуть способность выполнения действия. А также в будущем времени без заменителя вообще не обойтись.
Cosmonauts are not able to walk after flights in space. – Космонавты не способны ходить на ногах после полётов в космос.
The control at the exam was total, but we were able to cheat via the Internet. – Контроль на экзамене был совершенным, но мы были способны хитрить через Интернет.
Сегодня мы сравниваем слова could и managed. Итак, почему? Слово manage + something / somebody переводится как «управлять чем-то / кем-то». Managed to do something означает «смочь, справиться, умудриться что-то сделать». В общем, рассмотрим следующие примеры:
I could learn the phrasal verbs easily. – Я мог легко выучить фразовые глаголы.
Despite a lot of phrasal verbs, I managed to learn them and not to mix them up. – Несмотря на множество фразовых глаголов, я сумел выучить и не путать их.
The theme was very difficult, but we managed to understand it. – Тема была очень трудной, но у нас получилось понять её.
В принципе, managed to do something равносилен was / were able to do something.
