Once there lived a “five”. There was an abundance of “fives” in Kolya’s diary. But this Five was span-new. Kolya has got it right today! The Five was strolling along the streets of City of Knowledge with a proud view. There were other figures in the country. They were walking along the streets too and they all were turning around to look at the Five: they knew that the Five is an excellent grade for knowledge. The Five was strolling on and on, perking at everything. But suddenly she met a Minus.
This bully has always taken away everything. He has always wanted to bereave, bereave, bereave! Especially of numbers! And our Five dashed away from the Minus. That’s a pity, but this Five was on Maths, not on P.E. classes. And the Minus tagging after the Five touched on her. The Five turned into a Four. The sad Four came up to the bench and began to sob. On the bench there sat a Division.
— What’s happened to you? Why are you sobbing? Share with me!
— The Minus offended me! I used to be a Five. And now there is a “four” in Kolya’s diary!
— Oh, you have shared with me and now I have to divide you by two.
With these words the Division touched on the Four and turned it into two Twos! The Division divided the Four correctly and could go on his business. The two upset Twos went to the bus-stop. It was time to return to Kolya’s diary because the adventures of grades had already dragged on. And when they got onto the bus the conductor asked for fare.

— We are not guilty! We used to be a Five. And now we are riding to Kolya with a shame!
— I don’t want to know anything! Pay your fare for two seats!
The two upset Twos slugged to take their places.
— Why are you so upset? — They heard a kind voice. The Multiplication was sitting in front of them.
— We used to be a Five. And now two Twos are driving to Kolya’s diary.
— I could multiply you by two. But you will be two Fours. Meantime our Kolya is an excellent pupil. I could multiply you by three. But there are no “sixes” in diaries at all! I don’t know how to help you in your grief.
At this moment one sign jumped up to the speaking signs. Oh, it was a Minus!
— Multiplication, you could multiply the Twos by three and I could take away one number. So said, so done! And now two glad Fives are hurrying up to Kolya’s diary.
