Текст. AT DIMA’S LESSON. What sport! Как забавно!
In the text there are some habitual words that have different meanings in sport life.
P.E. classes! Our girls as usual were mobbing at the door and snickering. Today is the day of self-government. And Dima is instead of the coach because he is keen on sports. Dima deems that sports help to be strong and not to get sick and he tries to work out in the gym several times a week. Indeed, he prepared for the lesson carefully. In ten minutes he is bound to say:
– Come on! Stand in the row! Dress right! – commanded he. Our Anya is always dressy, just clothes-with-it! From time to time she titivates before her little mirror and combs. She jumped at the chance to tease Dima.
– May I dress up? May I put on a long skirt and high heels? – jested she.
– But joking apart! I simply said that you all must turn to my side… At first, we will warm up and work out a bit. Then we will play basketball.
– May we warm the bench? – Katya laughed and added her favourite tongue twister: Sit still, sit a bit till I kill a fly.
– Don’t make sport of me! – answered Dima in a loud voice.
– What? – wondered at him Katya.
– Just don’t guy me!… – explained he. – And please! Don’t sprain your arms! Play and don’t splay your legs! I am responsible for you! Girls! I wish you to nose out!
– What? Come again! – Katya re-asked.
– I wish you to win and not to square the score!
– To square? Why not to “round”? – she said in a waspish voice.
The game was zippy and exciting. The girls won. Dima shouted:
– Love game! The girls won by ten goals to love!
But what did he mean, indeed? Sometimes he talks in riddles….

To be fond of – увлекаться, интересоваться
To be interested in – интересоваться, заниматься
Go in for – заниматься, увлекаться; записаться на какие-нибудь занятия
Enjoy = to relish – очень сильно нравится
To be keen on – очень сильно нравится (keen – острый)
Go mad on – очень сильно увлекаться (mad – сумасшедший)
Prefer doing to doing – предпочитать (одно другому)
Dote on – обожать, любить до безумия
Cherish – лелеять, нежно любить
Admire – обожать, восхищаться

I. Look at the following list of kinds of sports. What kinds of sports do you already know? What are you fond of? And what do your parents and friends go in for? Take an interview from them and make up a story using substitutes of the verb “like”. If they aren’t interested in sport, ask them what they go in for then. Try to make a text with 10-12 sentences.
II. What is our favourite subject of conversation? What do we enjoy speaking about? About the weather, certainly! What mood have you got in such weather? What does the weather-forecast promise? Have you heard the weather-forecast? What weather is going to be? Кстати, а какая у нас любимая тема для разговора? О чем мы только ни разговариваем! Но о погоде поговорить обязательно! – про погоду зимой или про погоду осенью или про погоду весной на английском языке. А также описание погоды зимой для продвинутого уровня.
