Чтение 7 класс английский-2. Восьмое чудо света-I
Lion Mountain rises high and majestically above the endless expanses of the jungle. Why is the mountain a lion? Because the entrance that allows you to climb this mountain
is a sculpture [ˈskʌlpʧə] of a huge lion. And, probably, this lion would survey the jungle world in front of him high and majestically
if he had a head. The head, apparently, once was, but time has not spared these wonderful gates. Now the entrance to the mountain is decorated only with powerful paws with menacing claws.
What else, besides the truly breathtaking beauty, attracts thousands of tourists to this lion mountain? Towering above the jungle at an altitude of about 200 meters,
this mountain has preserved the remains of a fortress with palaces, gardens and other ruined structures [ˈstrʌkʧə] that were once adapted for the normal functioning of the city. It is striking that many pools located on the territory of the fortress still retain water. But the construction of the city dates back to the 5th century AD.
There are no surviving buildings on the lion mountain. Only ruins have «survived» to our time. But the system was preserved intact,
and the smart system with which the water necessary for life in the city was lifted up.
Climbing the numerous steep stairs will be tedious for several hours. The climate [ˈklaɪmɪt] in the jungle, as it is clear, is hot, the stone lion heats up
and this can cause discomfort [dɪsˈkʌmfət] when climbing. Therefore, it is worth thinking about comfortable shoes, long clothes
that cover from the scorching sun,
and a headdress. The ascent should be planned in the morning –
three to four hours before the onset of heat — or later in the evening.

You need to overcome 1200 steps to see the eighth wonder of the world! Yes, the eighth wonder of the world! Who said that there must be 7 miracles? Who invented this law? The Lion Mountain in Sigiriya was indeed called the eighth wonder of the world.
The ascent consists of three stages. First, tourists will see the hall with frescoes [ˈfreskəʊ]. The frescoes depict women, presumably concubines of the monarch ruling this city-state. These women serve their master by giving him treats and drinks, fanning him with a fan.
Presumably, there were about 500 frescoes in total; nowadays you can admire only 18 preserved images of ancient artists.

Then the visitors find themselves in the hall of mirrors. In it, the walls are carefully polished stones in which you can see your reflection. Since this story is very ancient, scientists can only hypothesize [haɪˈpɒθɪsaɪz] that the ruler invented this whim to be reflected everywhere
and admire his majestic person.
And finally, the apogee [ˈæpəʤiː] is the ascent to the very height of the lion mountain. What a spectacular view from here, when the whole world is under your feet! It is also interesting to wander around the ancient city:
you can admire the beauty of ancient architecture [ˈɑːkɪtekʧə], touch the mystery of wall paintings,
imagine the former luxury and prosperity of a civilization that does not exist today. Tropical vegetation and exotic animals – parrots, monkeys, monitor lizards and various birds – enhance the impressions of tourists.
What kind of people once lived in this wonderful place?
