What kind of people once lived in this wonderful place?

And it all started like in a Russian fairy tale, although the actions took place on the territory of Sri Lanka. Once upon a time there was a king Datusena (459 — 477) and he had two sons. One son, Mogallan, is legitimate, from the most beloved of his wives, and the second son, Kasapa, from one of his hostages. The king decided to hand over the reins of government to the son of true royal blood. But Kasapa – for some reason historians assume him to be defiant and discontented — raised an uprising, seized power into his own hands. The rightful heir fled somewhere to South India, but promised to return for payment.

The king himself did not escape a sad fate. His own son immured him alive in the wall. And he decided to establish his rule somewhere in a remote place. So a mountain in the jungle was chosen – in itself a unique creation of nature – the result of an extinct volcano [vɒlˈkeɪnəʊ].

The capital of Kasapa – with palaces, gardens and fountains – was quickly rebuilt, the self-styled monarch [ˈmɒnək] ruled in his fortified fortress for more than 18 years. But then his brother Mogallan shows up and challenges him to an open battle. So far, so successful in all his endeavors, the ruler suddenly lost his wisdom and agreed to accept the challenge.

The hostile troops, mounted on horses and elephants, lined up in front of each other and launched an offensive. But in the midst of the struggle, Kasapa’s elephant wanted to drink water and moved to the spring.

Kasapa’s warriors thought that their leader had decided to retreat, threw down their weapons and hurriedly turned back. So Kasapa was left without his troops and had to cut his throat.

And the triumphant [traɪˈʌmfənt] Mogallan ordered the destruction of the state of his traitor brother. Thus ended the history of the fortress on the lion mountain.

They say that after the fall of the Kasapa Empire [ˈempaɪə], there was a monastery [ˈmɒnəstrɪ] on the mountain for some time, but this is a completely different story.
