In 1978, a group of fifteen people belonging to a mysterious spiritual [ˈspɪrɪʧʊəl] community called Damanhur [dəˈmænə], led by its founder, Oberto Eyraudi, began digging a cave in the foothills of the Alps, in the Piedmont [ˈpiːdmənt] region of northern Italy, about 45 kilometers north of the city of Turin [tjʊˈrɪn]. Under the cover of darkness, using only a hammer and a pickaxe, the men took turns digging the mountain.

They worked with great zeal, and the first evening ended with them already biting into a stone mountain by a meter. The work continued for fifteen years under great secrecy. Only a handful of artists, artisans and builders who were directly involved in the construction of underground temples knew about the project.

In 1992, an anonymous letter warned the authorities about the existence of secret Damanhur temples. Since the members of the sect did not apply to the government authorities for a construction permit, a raid was carried out. However, the police could not find access to the temples. Then they threatened to blow up the mountains if the location of the temples was not revealed. Left with no choice, the spiritual community of Damanhur took three policemen and a prosecutor to the underground sanctuaries.

When the men entered the first temple, called the hall of the Earth, their mouths opened in amazement. Inside there was a circular chamber measuring 8 meters in diameter [daɪˈæmɪtə]. Central sculptural [ˈskʌlpʧərəl] columns depicting three-dimensional men and women supported a ceiling of intricately painted glass. The cave had several themed halls, tall sculptural columns covered with gold leaf, and the walls and ceilings were richly decorated with frescoes [ˈfreskəʊ], mosaics [məʊˈzeɪɪk] and crystals [krɪstl]. At the end of the tour, the whole group was in tears from the deep beauty of the underground temples.

When they went out into the fresh air, the prosecutor put his hand on the shoulder of the founder of the Damanhur sect, Oberto Eyraudi, and said: “Something must be done to save the temples.”

One of the local houses is a modest entrance to the Damanhur temple complex located underground. It consists of nine separate temples connected by a system of underground passages.

The total area of the grandiose [ˈgrændɪəʊs] temple complex is about 6 thousand cubic [ˈkjuːbɪk] meters. Its height can be compared with the height of a modern 11-storied building. The walls of the underground temples of Damankhur are decorated with beautiful paintings. There are many magnificent stained glass windows, columns and sculptures created using ancient techniques that are practically not used nowadays.

The spiritual leader of the Federation Damanhur Commune is a man named Falco, who also calls himself the Falcon. In addition to the amazing temple complex, the Commune has a developed aboveground infrastructure [ˈɪnfrəstrʌkʧə]. It has its own farm, shops, schools and even a university. Interestingly, every year the number of people wishing to join the unusual Italian commune is gradually increasing.
