In the middle of an endless valley there rises a mountain… A man-made mountain of crosses. Wooden and metal, small undergarments and human-sized… They are dug in or hanging on a string or chain everywhere.
This is not a cemetery, because there are no graves here. But the view of the mountain, every inch of which is dotted with crosses, is both fascinating and terrifying. Pilgrims who come to this place sometimes freeze for a minute in silent amazement. Although they knew where they were going, and even brought with them… crosses.
The origin of the mountain – when and why it began to grow – remains hazy.
There is a legend [ˈleʤənd]. Two hundred years ago there was a temple in the valley. But suddenly, as in that terrible fairy tale that will have a happy ending, the sky was covered with black clouds, a whirlwind rose. And a thunderstorm broke out. The temple has gone into the bowels of the earth. Only in the morning, at dawn, one could see strings of ghosts-monks, servants of the buried temple, floating over the waving grasses.
Soon, a local peasant’s beloved daughter fell seriously [ˈsɪərɪəslɪ] ill. The desperate father, who had already given up hope for his daughter’s healing, went to the valley to pray in a holy place, and left a cross. And a miracle happened. When the old man returned home, his perfectly healthy daughter came out to meet him. The rumor quickly flew around the neighborhood. After all, people are attracted to the incredible place.

There is information that the mountain began to rise from 1831. Then, when the Lithuanian uprising was suppressed by the authorities of the Russian Empire [ˈempaɪə], a large number of people fell as victims. And so we decided to perpetuate the memory of this event.
Attempts to dismantle the already quite impressive structure were made several times during the Soviet Union, in which atheism [ˈeɪθɪɪzm] was preached.
Now pilgrims from all over the world come to the mountain of crosses. And they bring their crosses with them. In Lithuania [lɪθjʊˈeɪnɪə], not far from the city of Shauliai, it is a famous landmark. Crosses of various faiths, statuettes [stæʧʊˈet] and monuments can be seen here. Those who set out on such a journey firmly believe that by leaving their cross on the mountain, they will leave their grief. And from now on, happiness will accompany [əˈkʌmpənɪ] them. Pilgrims believe. After touching the national shrine, the life path changes dramatically [drəˈmætɪklɪ] and cherished dreams come true.
Various figures are flashing on the Internet – attempts to calculate how many crosses the mountain consists of. It seems to be a futile [ˈfjuːtaɪl] exercise. There are undoubtedly thousands of thousands of them.
