An elderly man in a half-decayed uniform of the imperial army was sitting on the grass and crying, crying bitterly:

— Why didn’t I know that the war had been over?

On March 10, 1974, a 52-year-old Japanese fighter came out of the jungles

of the Philippines [ˈfɪlɪpiːnz] to surrender to the authorities. For 30 years, Lieutenant Hiro Onoda, unaware of the surrender of his country, was hiding,

continuing to fight, with his small detachment.

He could not come to his senses when he was told that the war had ended back in 1945.

— How could Japan lose? – the elderly Japanese was perplexed. He was crying his eyes out. – Why did my people die?

The story of wandering and overcoming hardships began for a 22-year-old soldier back in December 1944,

when he was assigned to lead a guerrilla war against the Americans on Lubanga Island. The Japanese then began to retreat, but left their detachments,

which were supposed to make sorties and lay mines. Then the fatal order sounded for the devoted Japanese,

which proved to be a verdict: suicide and surrender were forbidden in it. The battalion commander,

Major Taniguchi, firmly planted his words in Hiro Onoda’s mind: «Only I can cancel this order. And no one else.»

Having broken people into cells, the fighter retreated into the depths of the jungle of Lubanga Island.

When the war ended, American helicopters, to help fight the partisans,

flew over the forest, distributing leaflets that reported that Japan had capitulated on August 14, and contained an order to go out and surrender.

One of these leaflets was found by Hiro Onoda in October 1945. But when he heard the sounds of gunshots nearby, he did not believe

what he read and went deeper with his squad.

«My father fought against him,» says one policeman named Elamos. –

Then I became a policeman and continued to fight with the «Onoda squad».

A squad that consisted of three people! How many times have we combed the jungle, but we couldn’t find their trail! And at night they again made sorties and shot us in the back. We dropped fresh newspapers, photos and letters from their relatives

and friends from the air to convince them that the war was over long ago. But these stubborn people persistently continued to partisan.

Hiro Onoda, indeed, found this publication and other «literary works». But he was sure that all these were tricks to lure him out of the jungle:

after all, modern technologies allow us to produce such products. He also recognized the handwriting and photos of his relatives,

but he was sure that they were simply captured

and forcibly forced to «stamp» such correspondence. The courageous and devoted samurai [ˈsæmʊraɪ] was sure that they would return for him:

after all, the battalion commander himself, Major Taniguchi, had made a promise. At some point, he doubted whether they had forgotten him. It’s been so long, hasn’t it? But no! The major’s word is a firm word!

Years were passing by. Skyscrapers were growing in Japan, hypermarkets appeared on

and on, cheerful advertising was full of all colours at night. And Hiro – for the glory of the emperor– fought in the jungles of the Philippines:

living in a cave, boiling water from a stream on fire and eating fruits and roots. His squad ambushed military jeeps with some frequency and shot the drivers. One of the privates could not stand it and surrendered in 1950. After another 4 years, Corporal Shimada was killed in another firefight. The lieutenant [leˈtenənt] had the last private Kozuka under his command. They changed their place of refuge.

In October 1972, the «detachment» laid the last mine that did not explode. And the order had to be carried out. Then they attacked the patrolmen. Kozuka was shot, and Hiro was left completely alone.

When it turned out that a Japanese soldier had died 27 years

after Japan’s surrender, it caused a real shock in Tokyo. Search campaigns were sent to the Philippines. But Hiro was discovered quite by accident when a Japanese tourist Suzuki,

who was collecting butterflies, stumbled upon him. The tourist confirmed to Hiro that the war was over long ago. To which the staunch fighter reported: until the major cancels his order, I will fight.»

Upon returning home, Suzuki took up the search for Major Taniguchi,

which turned out to be not an easy task. He had long since changed his name and profession, working as a bookseller. Taniguchi had to change into a military uniform

and go to the jungles of the Philippines. Hiro stood at attention, and the chief of the last samurai solemnly read out the order to «surrender.»

So, on March 10, 1974, a 52-year-old Japanese fighter came out of the jungles of the Philippines to surrender to the authorities.
