Once upon a time there was a seller of watermelons. He was very greedy, and his watermelons were very expensive. No one wanted to buy his watermelons,

but the greedy merchant didn’t want to lower the price. He still didn’t have enough money!

One day, a merchant was returning from the city after selling watermelons through the forest on a cart home.

On the way, he decided to stop by a forest grove to pick mushrooms for dinner. But then I saw a little fairy sleeping quietly under a strawberry bush. Her wings fluttered slightly in her sleep,

and the air around her seemed to sparkle with multicolored sparks.

And then a snake silently crawled out of the grass, its eyes cold and its movements dexterous.

It began to get closer to the fairy…The merchant quickly picked up a stick from the ground and hit the snake with it. It hissed, darted to the side and disappeared into the tall grass. The fairy woke up from the noise and realized

that the merchant had saved her from danger. She decided to thank him and said that she would fulfill his every wish. But only one thing, it is no longer allowed, since this is a mandatory law for every fairy.

The merchant confidently, without hesitation, said: Let it be – no-one ever will have delicious watermelons! Even if every host has a crop failure every year,

one will be able to buy these watermelons only from me. The fairy sighed and promised that it would be so. But the cunning merchant deftly pressed the fairy’s train to the ground with a stick and said: since I saved you from death, you must add a gift to fulfill my wish.

The fairy pondered for a bit and replied:

— Good! When the buyer of your watermelon returns home, any object

that a person touches on the same day will turn into a watermelon object. And not the material itself will be watermelon, but only the watermelon design. But this thing — a fork, a sink, a swimming pool, even a room with furniture, a car or a fence

— will be very durable and reliable. And it will never go bad. Such a thing will serve faithfully, becoming also a fashionable interior. Only the merchant should not tell anyone about this in advance. People should figure it out for themselves. Only after that, the merchant will have no shortage of buyers. But this gift, — the fairy added, — also has a condition: this magic will disappear if your heart becomes completely callous.

The fairy said this and flew away into the grove, leaving behind only a light scent of forest flowers and a shimmering speck of dust,

which immediately melted into the air.

And everything happened exactly as the fairy said. At first, no one understood anything:

A man buys a watermelon, brings it home, takes a cup, and suddenly the cup has a watermelon pattern, and it’s so strong that you can hammer nails with it. A person gets on a bicycle, and it also becomes a watermelon. And it becomes so fast and fun to ride it! If someone touches the bathroom door, lo and behold!  — Everything there becomes watermelon: the sink, the bathtub and the towel! The bath is so fragrant, with the smell of juicy watermelon. And the towel is so soft, it also smells like watermelon!
