And then people realized: the watermelons from the merchant are not ordinary, but magical! And the customers reached out to him: they really wished unusual miracles! One bought a watermelon, he sat down on the sofa, and the sofa immediately becomes watermelon! One bought another watermelon, he jumped into the swimming pool,

and now he is swimming in the watermelon pool! And one decided to cook lunch in a fancy new pot, so buy another watermelon!

The merchant began to prosper. Every day his cart returned from the city completely empty, and his purse became heavier and heavier. He built himself a huge house, bought a new horse, and hired an assistant to help grow and load watermelons. And the richer he got, the greedier he became. It was completely unnoticeable to him.

And one day, an old woman came up to him at the city market and handed him the last coins for a small watermelon, she wanted to please her grandchildren. But the merchant grimaced and said:

-Not enough! My product is rare and unusual. You have to pay twice for such a watermelon.

The old woman lowered her eyes, nodded obediently and trudged away, barely moving her legs. And the merchant also shouted after her:

— There’s nothing to beg for! My product is expensive, not for the poor!

Only these words were still ringing in the air, and a quiet chill had already run through the melon, as if a shadow had covered the green vines.

At night, the merchant dreamed of a fairy: She stood in front of him, not smiling, not angry, but just looking at him sadly. And all those people to whom he had refused to sell watermelon today flashed by around her.

The next morning, out of habit, the merchant went into his watermelon garden to harvest crops for sale

and was stunned: instead of juicy, sweet watermelons, green balls, hard as stones, and completely tasteless hung in the vegetable beds. The merchant was rushing around the field, tearing off leaves, shaking stems, shouting, calling for the fairy — but no one answered. The merchant realized that the magic had been gone.

He realized that what the fairy had warned about had happened. Since then, his extraordinary watermelons have stopped growing. The old glory disappeared along with the magic, and the flow of customers dried up.

However, by that time the merchant had accumulated a lot of wealth — he managed to save money while his trade was flourishing. But they were no longer a joy to him. He realized that the joy for him was that his watermelons fulfilled the dreams of his customers. It turned out that this was exactly what he was pleased about. And the merchant gradually changed. He sold his noble house, acquiring a more modest dwelling.

He continued to sell his watermelons, which were ordinary, not magical, but quite good. And he even gave away some fruits for free to those who could not pay for them. And with the money he earned, he bought sweets for the children, who came to visit him to listen to the oldster, as one day he met a fairy, and he sold watermelons, fulfilling a wish.
