Чтение 8 класс английский-17. Загадочный круг-1
The Brodgar Circle is located in the vicinity of Orkney, Scotland. It is located on a narrow isthmus between Lakes Stennes and Harrey. A circle of stones with a diameter [daɪˈæmɪtə] of 104 meters, carries no less mysteries than Stonehenge. The age of this structure has never been precisely determined. Although it is believed that it is approximately 2500-2000 BC.
According to the collection of legends from G.F.Black (1903)… This megalithic [megəˈlɪθɪk] monument was called the Temple of the Sun. Initially, the circle included 60 stones. But by the end of the 20th century there were only 27 left. The stones are installed inside a circular moat up to 3 meters deep. And 9 wide.
Its last researches were in the 70s.

In 1814, shortly after the visit of Sir Walter Scott, a catastrophic event occurred for the complex. A local farmer, annoyed by the relentless attention to the stones, decides to dismantle them. His actions caused a great public outcry, which resulted not only in the intervention of the authorities. But also in attempts to burn down his house. The farmer later apologized for his actions. But not before causing massive damage to the complex by toppling one of the stones and destroying the other one.
In 1906, the complex was taken under state protection. The complex is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
There is a legend about the temples of the Sun and the Moon. Young people who wanted to get engaged went first to the temple of the Moon, where the girl took the oath of allegiance. After that, the couple went to the temple of the Sun. And there a young man performed the same ceremony. The last one they visited was Odin’s Stone, where they joined hands through the stone, making mutual vows.

When a young Orkney couple wanted to confirm to each other the seriousness of their relationship, they came to the stone and joined their hands through a hole in it. They called the «Odin’s oath» this action.

The fame of this stone was great. In the 18th century one young man seduced a girl. But refused her and the child, for which he was very severely judged by local elders. When the priest asked what was the reason for their severity, they replied. You don’t know how terrible this man did, because he broke Odin’s Oath.
The moat around the Brodgar Circle today, of course, is not as deep as 3 m when it was built.
In order to dig a similar ditch in the rocky rock, 80,000 working hours were required. That is 80 people had to work 100 days for 10 hours a day. And for the installation of megaliths, of course, much more was required. The only thing that can be said with certainty. It is that such work required a long, complex and strenuous work of a large number of people. Which indicated the presence of a fairly highly organized society.
