Обратите внимание, что одно действие может длиться на фоне другого. Или на фоне одного длительного действия, что-то может произойти, как разовый момент, как факт действия.

When I woke up, the sun was shining greatly outdoors and the birds were twittering joyfully. – Одно действие произошло, когда другие действия длились.

While Mom was cooking, she was listening to some music. – Действия длятся одновременно.

Determine the right Tense: Past Simple or Past Continuous.

1. The form-master / to give us much information and / to joke for the whole lesson.

2. While the teacher / to hold the lesson and / to write on the blackboard, the pupils / to slog at the exercises.

3. Vasya / to crouch all 45 minutes because he / not to learn his task.
