It was a long time ago, a long time ago. And it was far away, in Holland. And so, it would seem, what is a worm? It’s a very small creature. This creature almost destroyed an entire country. The whole of Holland almost died because it was attacked by a shipworm. It is known that the location of Holland is below the level of the world ocean. And in order to exist, this country surrounded itself with wooden dams. They didn’t know about cement [sɪˈment] then. And it was very expensive to import a stone to protect it from the ocean.

Holland was also famous for its fast and long-sailing ships. But what happened? One by one, the Dutch ships began to sink.

There was then a famous pirate [ˈpaɪ(ə)rət] operating off the coast of Holland. His name was Fearless Derek, and he sailed on his magnificent ship, the Golden Hind. No one could handle the Derek pirates, no one could catch him. And Derek accumulated huge chests of gold and other wealth, robbing ships everywhere, domestic and foreign. But then the ship of the fearless Derek sank, sank with all its wealth. And it wasn’t the purpose of an opponent who was fighting with the fearless pirate and riddled him. Worms riddled his ship!

They are very hungry, these worms. And they can eat the whole ship without a trace! But then they will drown themselves. Therefore, the ship turns into dust.

And the dams around Holland began to fall down! Everything began to fall down at once. The water threatened to sink Holland completely. It flooded the fields and demolished the houses of the inhabitants.

The country’s government sounded the alarm! All livers who were quickly leaving their usual activities were called to save the country. People quickly cut down forests and brought building materials to the destroyed dams. They worked for days and nights to save their country.

Since then, a legend about a boy has been known. While the adults were working to save some dams, they did not have time to save the other dams. A little boy found a hole in the dam, plugged it with his finger and was sitting for so many hours until he was discovered by adults. As a result, the country was saved!

Watching the shipworm, its principle of drilling and making passages, the English engineer Marc Brunel invented a tunneling machine [məˈʃiːn] and successfully used it to construct the first tunnel [tʌnl] under the Thames in 1825. Most of the metro tunnels are being built using this technology today.
