Matvey and Dima were close friends. But their friendship seemed a little strange. And this is not because they studied at different schools, but only met in the playground in their free time.

That’s because they beat each other up when they met. And in the most merciless way! They pinched each other, twisted their arms, tried to knock each other to the floor. If there was an object at hand, they could hit each other with that object. It was obvious that they did quite sensitive blows to each other. But at the same time they always remained satisfied. After such a scuffle, red–faced and sweating, they went on about their business — either together or apart.

Knowing the specificity of such friendship, Natalya Stanislavovna wrote them different times in her schedule so that they would not meet each other, at least at her house. But it didn’t always work. They periodically came together. One of them sat down at the table to study, while the other was waiting on the couch and surfed on the phone. A scuffle could occur at any moment.

If only one of them answered Natalya Stanislavovna incorrectly, it was a reason to laugh and start a fight. And if they started a fight, it was hard to stop them. It was hard to shout over them. They were so carried away in their fight, coming up with ways to hurt their friend-opponent even more. It was simply useless to stop and separate them. They would knock each other down on the couch or even on the floor and hit each other like dough.

Once, after one such fight, Natalya Stanislavovna simply saw them out the door. It was eight o’clock in winter, minus [ˈmaɪnəs] twenty degrees outside. In general, it was dark and cold.

Natalya Stanislavovna went to the kitchen to cook dinner. And just then, her husband returned from work and asked if her pupils are now beating each other in the snow on a bench. She looked at her watch: it was half past eight.

— No, in such a cold, in such frost, in such darkness, no! Matvey and Dima were not so friendly that they were persistently beating each other for half an hour under such circumstances.

But her husband continued to explain:

— It’s just that when I passed by, one of them said to the other: hush, hush, or he’ll notice us. I went home to the entrance, and they started hitting each other again.

At the next lesson, Natalya Stanislavovna asked Dima, who for some reason came this time without his closest friend:

— Did you beat each other in the cold on a bench in the snow at half past eight in the evening?

Dima confessed: they are! That’s friendship!
