Children are fond of everything from birth, starting with rattles, continuing with cars,

robot transformers, Lego and computer games. Born Eric Venier Inkapier Ramirez (Eric Weiner Hincapié Ramirez, Colombia) also,

when he was little, he first rode in a wheelchair, then raced a bicycle and a skateboard. But, having no pirates as relatives, he was secretly fond of… skulls.

The 22-year-old tattoo artist Kalaca Skull, as the world now knows him, got his first tattoo [ˈtætuː]

after his mother died: assuming a disapproving reaction from a loved one,

Eric just didn’t want to scare her. And now he has decided to radically change his body. The future Skull became the first person in Colombia [kəˈlʌmbɪə]

who voluntarily decided to remove his nose and ears — the missing attributes of a real skull. To look more like a skeleton [ˈskelɪtn], he had his eyes tattooed[ˈtætuː].

Imitating eye sockets, he painted over the space around the eyelids with a cadaverous colour. Transforming himself purposefully and «systematically» Eric filled a tattoo

in the form of a jaw on both sides of the mouth — because the skull has no lips! At the next operation, he cut his tongue and painted it also in cadaverous gray. The head of the newly appeared Skull is cut «under the comb»

and covered with numerous tattoos, however, as well as the whole body, which becomes an art gallery of tattoos. For greater likeness to a dead head and intimidation, piercing is added: between the bridge of the nose, on the tongue and on the lips.

Of course, the appearance of the «living Skull» could not fail to attract the attention of both the surrounding and the press. Eric has faced both condemnation and attacks,

and with fans who stop him on the street to take pictures.

The skull is an emblem [ˈembləm] of human mortality, first of all. A phenomenon that is unknown and frightening to us:

usually death is associated with illness, suffering and decomposition of the flesh. But at the same time, the skull is considered as a receptacle of the soul,

the life of a being. From ancient times to the present day, this symbolism [ˈsɪmbɒlɪz(ə)m] unites a variety of groups of people: schemers of Orthodox monasteries, Goths, pirates, SS men, rockers and bikers. The list can still be continued.

Bikers’ skull is a symbol of fearlessness before speed and death. It is a symbol that brings victory and protection from death itself. Among the Celts, the scull was revered as a sacred force that protected a person from adverse forces

and bestowed health and wealth. In ancient Rome, a skull with bones symbolized [ˈsɪmbəlaɪz] victory over death

and was used by soldiers [ˈsəʊlʤə] during triumphal [traɪˈʌmfəl] victory processions,

and was always accompanied by a Latin phrase that has become winged in our time: Remember that you are mortal!

Muslims [ˈmʊslɪmz] associate the well-known saying that the fate of a person is written on his forehead,

with the seams of the skull, the curves of which resemble letters.

Eric the Skull explains that he wants to look like a skeleton, because under the skin and after death,

that’s what all people look like. He believes that criticizing [ˈkrɪtɪsaɪz] him is as stupid

and pointless as condemning women who artificially enlarge their lips, breasts or buttocks. The Colombian does not intend to stop there and continues to improve his appearance.

Recently, the Skull became a father. Perhaps this child was born undaunted: you can’t scare him with a babaika now,

because his babaika is dad himself!
