It is hot… A weary traveller, who has not yet reached his destination
and is looking for a temporary shelter, notices a spreading tree. Its succulent leaves are ellipsoid [ɪˈlɪpsɔɪd], with exact veins… The tree itself is sprinkled with fruits resembling small apples. And by its foot it has already dropped into the hot sand, as if welcoming a traveller,
many of its small, but such fragrant gifts! How not to pick up a heavenly apple from the sand or not to tear it right off the branch! How not to quench your thirst,
not to inhale this fragrant aroma [əˈrəʊmə] and not to rejoice at such a sweet and juicy taste!
But after a minute, after biting off the fruit, the traveller will feel all the growing unpleasant sensations. It was as if he had swallowed
a hot pepper doused with sulfuric acid [sʌlˈfjʊərɪk ˈæsɪd]. His throat is burned and cramps are cramping him, everything in his stomach is burning with fire. A large amount of water,
which is usually resorted to in cases of discomfort due to eating unacceptable food, hardly eases the torment. Water is simply impossible to swallow down due to cramps and unbearable pain. If such a person happened only to bite off a piece of this fruit,
then he has a good chance of survival. But those who have eaten the whole apple of paradise with an appetite,
enjoying its taste and juiciness, can hardly help them. Knowledgeable people who were destined to encounter similar cases will recommend
that you drink milk for several hours in succession.

The mancinella tree carries a deadly danger literally with its whole being –
not only its fruits are poisonous, but also its leaves, bark and flowers. If you get caught in the rain and hide under the crowns of this tree, the drops that hit your skin will cause burns If you want to take a picture in an embrace with a tree,
with prolonged contact with the bark of the tree, burns will appear at the places of touch. Accidental ingestion of fruit juice into the eye causes instant blindness.
The treacherous tree has been known to people for a long time. At one time, it killed more than one hundred European sailors, in particular,
Spanish conquistadors, pirates and other careless wanders who tried to quench their thirst and hunger with its fruits.
A logical question arises: if mancinella is so dangerous, why didn’t people simply destroy it? After all, such trees are quite widespread on the sandy sea coasts
of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. It also grows in Mexico, the Antilles, Colombia and the coasts of the West Indies.
Such attempts have indeed been made since the middle of the XVIII century. Then in Puerto Rico organized a total cutting down of a dangerous tree.

But nowadays people have learned to harvest mancinella wood, which is considered a valuable and rare breed
– very durable and with a beautiful shade. After appropriate processing, expensive exquisite furniture is made of it.
And yet, when travelling to exotic countries, listen to the guide, read the warning signs
and do not put anything in your mouth — even if it looks very appetizing and attractive!
