The «ghost town» of Teotihuacan is located just fifty kilometers from Mexico City. The ancient abandoned city was discovered by the Aztecs in the 14th century. They believed

that the city was built by giants, it was so majestic. The Aztecs named it Teotihuacan, the place where the gods appeared. But who built this city and when? Why did they leave this city?

The city is carefully planned. The Road of the Dead is 5 kilometers long and forty meters wide in the very center. There are numerous temples on the sides of the Road of the Dead. The city was clearly intended for religious ceremonies. Temples are built in the form of pyramids.

Mexicans began to study it seriously only at the end of the 20th century, that is, 13 centuries after the last inhabitants left it, without telling anyone about the reason for their departure. Because of this, it is almost impossible to uncover the mystery of its origin.

During the excavations, archaeologists [ɑːkɪˈɒləʤɪst] were able to find out that Teotihuacan began to be built around the 3rd century BC. At that time, this valley was occupied by small agricultural villages, and their main activity was obsidian mining, due to which trade began actively to develop in this area. In the 2nd century A.D., this place was already a real city with at least 125,000 inhabitants. In the following years, its area only increased, reaching 36 square kilometers.

Around 650 AD, the inhabitants began to abandon the city. And they left it entirely after 100 years.

The reason is still unknown and there are many guesses, because the city was found with various damages. Some buildings were burnt out.

Some temples were deliberately covered with sand and stone. Moreover, in terms of the amount of material that the temples were covered with, this is inhuman work. It would take several decades, several thousand people, or the help of… the gods. Many steps were destroyed. Maybe, the last inhabitants could not have restored the city in such a state. And they left.
