In 1878, Odoardo Beccari, an Italian botanist, discovered an unusual plant in the tropical forests of Sumatra. It was huge – about 3 meters high and 1.5 meters wide. The scientist, of course, became interested in the finding and dug up several roots from the plant. He wanted to bring them to England for study.

When crossing the border, he was arrested and his finding was taken away. However, he managed to hide a few seeds and even conceal a small seedling. The brave botanist brought the salvaged items across the border and sent them to the Kew Botanical Garden in England, as he wanted.

The stolen flower bloomed there in 1889. In 1926, this extraordinary flower bloomed again. So many people came to the botanical garden to watch this plant that the police had to be brought in to keep order. Later, the tallest plant was recorded in nature – 3.66 meters. If the plant is grown in greenhouse conditions, it can reach only 1.5-2.5 meters. Tubers of an adult plant have a weight of about 50 kilograms. A record weight of 91 kilograms was fixed for the tuber. Because of its size, in addition to the main name amorphous, it was given the name titan [ˈtaɪt(ə)n].

The plant heats up to a temperature of 36.6 degrees! Just like an ordinary healthy person! And this happens just during the flowering period. And then it starts! The plant emits a disgusting smell that has been compared to a dead rat, sweaty socks, and rotting meat. So it’s rare for anyone to admire a rarely blooming plant without pinching their nose! This is how another name appears – corpse flower.

Yes, an unusual flower does not have a specific flowering period. It can bloom in a few years or even decades. Therefore, when the titan bloomed for the first time in the botanical garden of the Bronx, in New York, the district president was very proud of such a rare event. The flower has even been called the Bronx flower. That’s what it was called until 2000.

But the new district president didn’t like the idea: «I hate to think of a corpse flower as the flower of the Bronx, because people will think of the Bronx and think, ‘The Bronx stinks.’ The Bronx is a place where people live, and the corpse flower is not a folk plant. The day lily is well suited for the Bronx.» Unfortunately, this flower is very rare. It was listed in the Red Book. It is difficult to grow it in greenhouse conditions, and in Sumatra people are constantly cutting down forests and reducing the habitat of the titan and stink.
