Not only the workers’ cities and villages are abandoned, but also entire resorts. In the 1970s holidays on the Cypriot [ˈsɪprɪət] coast in the ancient city of Famagusta were very popular. The elite quarter of Varosha was particularly successful: wealthy people from all over the world came to the resort, including celebrities (for example, Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor visited here). And rooms in expensive hotels were booked for years in advance. The area is nicknamed the New Famagusta. Varosha looked like a city within a city with its fashionable apartments, expensive villas, modern infrastructure, bars and nightclubs.
But it did not manage to please his guests for long. In 1974, Turkish troops invaded Cyprus and divided the island into Northern and Southern territories. In particular, the Turkish Republic appropriated Famagusta, which is why the Cypriots [ˈsɪprɪət] immediately left their homes. And Varosha has become a UN buffer zone: only its former residents can move back into the city, but they cannot do so because of the occupation.
Now the resort looks apocalyptic: there are rusty cars on the streets, the on luxurious long ago buildings are overgrown with plants, and its territory is surrounded by barbed wire. Despite the closed zone and checkpoint, you can get here: recently, curious travellers have been allowed to enter the ghost resort. You can walk along the beaches where world stars once rested only at certain times and in specially defined places: houses are being destroyed and turned into slums, where wild animals now live, so it’s not safe to go inside.
