What kind of creature is being shown to us now? You won’t believe it: it’s a fish. It’s a rag-picker seahorse. It looks like it’s dressed in leaves. But these leaves are not fins. These leaves are a disguise for this fish. And it’s a great camouflage [ˈkæməflɑːʒ].

The fish itself moves very slowly. This poses a danger to the seahorse. Of course, there are many different predators in the sea. Therefore, it is very necessary for it to pretend to be a plant!

The colouring of the seahorse may vary depending on the habitat of the seahorse and its food preferences. It can be sandy, green, brown, and even multicolored. So it completely merges with the environment, and hungry opponents do not see it. The seahorse measures up to 35 centimeters. It has a proboscis mouth to feed on. It swallows his food – small crustaceans and fish – whole. The fish can’t chew, its jaws are too weak. The crustacean also has a tail, like all normal fish, for movement. But what is special about this tail? All seahorses are able to grab seaweed with their tails during a storm and thus escape to be thrown onto the shore. But the rag-picker seahorse doesn’t have that ability. Because of this, during sea storms, a lot of ragwort are thrown by the waves onto the land, and they die.

Ragwort live only in the Indian Ocean! Near the coast of Australia! Because of its strangeness, the rag-picker has even become an informal mascot of Australia itself!! Its image is actively used in advertising, on badges, T-shirts and even coins.

Interestingly, the rag-picker mom gives the laid eggs to the rag-picker dad for safekeeping! And scientists can’t explain one unusual fact: for 4-8 weeks, while dad is guarding the eggs, mom and dad meet as if on purpose. The rag-picker dad is dancing something like a dance, as if he’s reporting: You know, Mom, the babies are fine!

Well, that’s how scientists almost understand it. But then, when rag-babies appear, parents completely forget about their children. Only twenty percent of rag-picker babies survive. Because fish become adults only by the age of 2-3.
