Scientists will come up with all sorts of things, just to make a discovery!

Everyone knows that water boils at a hundred degrees. We can’t taste boiling water. And how did scientists manage to look for anything alive in hydrothermal [haɪdrəˈθɜːml] vents where the water reaches 400 degrees! And they found it! They found such a cute crab at a depth of 2200 meters! And it happened relatively recently – in 2005. Well, yes! Before that, scientists could not have guessed to look for something under such conditions! And they named such a find – the yeti crab. It is quite clear why: because of its appearance.

It looks like some kind of cute furry creature. Its entire body and five pairs of paws are covered with thick fur. But this wool is not fluffy and pleasant to the touch. Of course, living in conditions of a dark depth of more than 2000 meters, under enormous pressure, at a temperature of 400 degrees, is a harsh thing. Although, if it lives there easily, are these normal conditions for it? The crab reached 15 centimeters in size. Because of the full darkness, the crab can hardly see: it is almost blind. Scientists think that it is the fur on its paws that help it navigate in space. Is it supposed to? Yes, because only a single specimen was brought to the surface! The second specimen was discovered only in 2011. It was slightly different from the first one and was given a different name: Fluffy Kiwi.

An interesting thing of the appearance of this crab is that it is completely covered with bacteria. Scientists have found out that the crab feeds on these bacteria. A very convenient device! Cover yourself with food and eat to your heart’s pleasure! You don’t have to worry too much about hunting and moving!

Many people don’t mind eating crabs. But you can’t eat this crab: it’s poisonous. After all, it lives in water with sulfur compounds and is simply poisonous! So if you manage to catch a crab like that, don’t eat it! Or better yet, take it to the scientists for a detailed study! The only recovered specimen of this species sits in a pickled jar in Paris at the National Museum of Natural History.
